Everyday before lunch we go around the table and say what we are thankful for on that day. Today Landry said....
"I am thankful that I moved to Serenbe."
It was so very sweet and made me what to say thank you to my parents for creating such a beautiful place. So thank you mom and dad and everyone who is a part of Serenbe...a place that brings so much joy to children.

Last Day of School
We had a brief half day today with lots of smiles and hugs.
The year flew by...I can not believe it is over.
I enjoyed every minute of teaching and spending time with these special, magical, beautiful young children.
I have loved sharing the moments of laughter and the moments that touch my heart.
Thank you for reading.
I will be back in August and look forward to sharing more special stories as I continue this wonderful journey of teaching....

"And I am going to get my goldfish at the very end of summer so I can bring it to school for our very first show and share."

So excited for camp. I would be too sad if I went a whole summer without spending time with all of my little friends.

I was not in school all last week because a dear, dear friend who holds a very special place in my heart passed away. He was training to become a free diver and he died in a tragic accident in his family swimming pool. He was 25 and full of life. He taught me to smile when times were rough, to love unconditionally, and to live life without question. I would like to share a poem that was very special to him. I read this at his funeral this past Thursday.
If You Think You Can

My favorite excuses....
The weather has been really nice all week so when it is almost time to go outside the kids get very excited. This means they clean up very quickly and usually not very well. When their mess is discovered the responses are usually very similar. My two recent favorites are....
"Oh that was supposed to be a secret."
and
"That was sort of an accident. Maybe a little on purpose but also I forgot."

Napoleon has beautiful curly blond hair. He once told me he felt like a lion. He recently got a haircut and it is a little shorter right now.
After shaking his head and messing his hair up with his hands he looked at me and said...
"Do I look like Napoleon again?"

"Let me go look in the mirror just to be sure."

After an hour of sitting in my lap cuddled up against me and barely moving he looked up and said....
"How long have I been sitting here like this?"

Odelia was decked out in all green today and she brought in special treats for the class. Her mom is from Ireland.
Me "Odelia do you like St. Patrick's Day?"
"Yes, I get to have treats."
Me "Do you think the kids in Ireland are doing something special in school today?"
"Yes."
Me "What do you think they are doing?"
"I don't know. Maybe celebrating the 4th of July."
Me "Why would they be doing that?"
"Because we are celebrating them so they should be celebrating us."

I was not in class today because I took the day off to head down to the beach for a weekend with some girlfriends. So... before I left I did a random selection from all the stories that have been submitted so far!

Marguerite and Edward have a long standing relationship. Edward is a sweetheart and quite the ladies man.

"He would not talk to me."
Me "Why not?"
"He is talking to his friends right now."
Me "Well sometimes that happens. Boys just need time. How about you finish writing in your notebook and not worry about it and by the time we get on the playground I bet he will talk to you again."

1 hour later and 3 min into being on the playground
a big hug followed by...."Thanks, Ms.Kara"
Whether you are 5...15...25...35...and so on.....some things never change. I am glad that for the time being I could be of help with the 5 year old relationship drama.

The fascination with the chicken eggs has begun......and I usually eat a few hard boiled eggs at lunch....
"MS. KARA!!"
Me "Yes, Lucy?"
"Do not eat that egg....there is a chicken in there."
Me "No, its okay. I brought this egg from home. Just like I do almost everyday. It is hard boiled."
"You are gonna eat a baby chick?"
Me "No. This egg will not make a baby chicken."
Next comes a ten min long conversation explaining chicken eggs and how some are fertilized (have baby chickens in them) and some are not and you eat those....scrambled, sunny side up, etc. Stories are told, questions are asked and everyone seems to understand. Then two more min go by and I go to take a bite of my egg....
Lucy and Odelia (while giggling) "Ms. Kara, Ms.Kara you are eating a baby chicken."
followed by lots of giggles.

We are hatching chicken eggs in class so we just set up the incubator and explained it to all of the kids. As you can imagine, many of them are very intrigued by it.
"Ms. Kara, when will the chicken eggs hatch?"
Me "Not for a little while."
"So not until after lunch?"
Me "No, not for a few weeks."
"ohhhhh.....well why do they have to stay inside that box?"
Me "That is the incubator. It keeps the eggs warm."
after three failed attempts at saying the word incubator.....
"Can I take them out of the....you know.....the word you keep saying...."
Me "No, they have to stay in there until they hatch."
"And then we can take them out?"
Me "Yes."
"Great. I cant wait to meet them."

Silly me. I guess I got a little too into the fire building for my three year old friend.
Everyone had a wonderful break, but I was very happy to be back playing pretend with all my young friends. I missed their smiles and constant curiosity.

We have winter break next week (although it feels like it should be spring break) so before we went home today a few of the kids were telling me their plans.....

I am going to spend all day playing with my sister and my baby brother. But not my other brother, he is too mysterious for me.
Odelia
I am going to do so many special things. I am going to the circus and to Mississippi and all over.
Napoleon
My brother planned a party for me. And then I am getting on a plane.
Harry
I am going to take lots of walks.
Me "It sounds like all of you are going to have so much fun. I will miss you."

Today, since it was so beautiful, we were outside for our after school art program. As we were drawing, a huge flock of birds flew overheard and we all looked up.
"Where do you think they are going?"
Me "I am not sure Napoleon. Where do you think they are going?"
"Well they are leaving Serenbe. And I don't know why they would want to do that. It's their wings fault, not theirs."

upon walking in the door with her pretty skirt and shirt on...
"Mom you made me be beautiful all day today, can I wear my jeans now?"
I love this comment because it so perfectly fits Sally. and obviously it happened at home....after school hours......
So that brings me to my new addition to the blog!
I am always hearing great stories from parents, friends, etc and so my sister suggested that every now and then I should post a funny story that I enjoyed (but did not personally hear).
Sooooo if you are a parent of one of the adorable kiddos I have the pleasure of spending my days with OR a parent, an aunt, an uncle, a friend, (anything!) of any adorable child please send me their cute story.
I will do a drawing every few weeks and post it on the blog. Once you have submitted it, I will keep it in the pot so it could appear weeks or months after you submit it.

Today we had a special valentines tea party and the kids were just too cute so I have to do more than one story...

Me "Aw thank you Jacob, I love you too."

Spending Valentine's Day with these adorable kids that I love dearly reminded me that although yes this is a Hallmark holiday it is a wonderful time to remember to tell EVERYONE you care about just how much you love them.

Me "We are all out of oranges so we have to use lemons for now."

Me "People live all over the world. But most of the people you know do live in North America."
Lucy "I use to live in South Carolina. Now I live in Georgia. Those are both in North America. But... Santa Claus does not live in North America."
Jacob "He lives in the North Pole."
Harry "I think you can take a jet plane to get there."
Lucy "Probably a snow plane."
Jacob "So we live in North America?"
Me "Yes, that is correct."

Every Thursday is Show and Share so there is always lots of chatter about it in the morning when everyone arrives.
Edward "Ms. Kara, I am not going to bring anymore show and shares until I get another pet."
Me "What happened to your gecko that you brought in last week?"
Edward "Well, um.....he is no longer around."
Colby "Did he die?"
Edward "Well yes."
Colby "I meant to say pass. Did he pass? It sounds better that way."
Edward "Yes, he passed."
Me "I am so sorry to hear that. Did you have a funeral for him?"
Edward "No not yet. First my dad has to take him back to PetsMart to see if we can get another one."

After I saw Odelia sitting on the playground by herself for a few minutes I went over to talk to her.
Me "Odelia, What are you doing?"
"Shh Ms. Kara, I am waiting for my prince."
Me "Oh is he close by?"
"He might be I just have to wait and see."
30 min later after we have gone inside
Me "Odelia, whats wrong?"
"My prince did not find me on the playground and I am not happy about it."
Me "Well maybe he will find you tomorrow."
"But tomorrow is sooooo far away and I do not want to have to wait that long."
If only tomorrow still seemed like it was sooooo far away.....

Harry
Garnie (my older/big sister) and Quinn (my younger/baby sister) often bring me lunch at school.
So naturally the kids are intrigued by them and ask questions.
Harry knows Garnie but has never met Quinn.
So....Quinn brings me lunch.....and after she leaves.....
"Who was that?"
Me "That was Quinn, my younger sister."
"Like how Ms. Garnie is your sister?"
Me "Yes remember how we talked about how I have two sisters? One is older and one is younger."
"Oh yes, like how I have a baby brother?"
Me "Yes, like that. Quinn is my baby sister."
Long pause followed by Harry slowly turning his head.....
"Ms. Kara, that WAS NOT a baby. She was a real live adult."

Napoleon
Almost everyday for lunch Napoleon has a jelly sandwich and he loves it. So one day when he sat starring at it for over five minutes, I was curious what the problem was.
Me "Napoleon is something wrong with your sandwich?"
"Uh, Yes."
Me "What's wrong with it?"
"My mom is out of town."
Sometimes moms just know best.

Another Snow Day!!
Since we had a play day yesterday I guess it is now technically just a four day weekend but we basically have a ten day unexpected snow vacation. Crazy!
Glad I got some snuggles from the kiddos yesterday....I'm off to Colorado to go skiing!

Technically today was still a snow day and school was closed.
However, I knew several parents in the neighborhood were going stir crazy and since several of us walk to school I decided to host an informal "play day" for those who could make it.
Cornelius
"Ms. Kara if we are not doing our work today why are we at school?"
Me "We are going to have a play day and do games and crafts."
"Couldn't we have just played at home?"
Me "Yes, but this will be more fun because you can be with all your friends."
"Oh okay....(brief pause)....and maybe because the moms and dads and grownups and stuff maybe needed a little break at home?

My very first post!
I became a preschool teacher in August 2010 and I have loved absolutely every minute of it. Each and every day one of the kids says something that makes me laugh and I love telling people what they said. So I finally decided to start a blog! I am not much of a writer so each post will consist simply of one hilarious conversation, comment, or statement I heard that day.
At the moment there are 15 kids in our class and I will make up names for each of them unless I get permission from a parent to use their real name. There are a handful of kids who are the main talkers so you might see the same five names on a regular basis. But be sure to watch for the names you do not see that often. Sometimes those are the best.
In honor of the first post I will write my current top three favorite conversations. From here on out there will be one per day.
Jacob
"Ms. Kara, your socks are very soft."
Me "Thank you but these are tights."
(brief pause followed by Jacob bending over and looking all the way up my dress and then popping right back up) "WOW, they go all the way to the top."
Me holding back my laughter "Yes, Jacob they sure do."
Odelia
"Ms. Kara I do not ever want to get married because I do not want my belly to be cut open."
Me "Yes Odelia sometimes when you have a baby your belly gets cut open but you can get married and not have a baby."
"Well I still do not want to ever get married."
Me "Why?"
"Because I want to be a princess forever."
Napoleon
"Ms. Kara do you know what happens if you try new foods?"
Me "What happens?"
"You get a new movie."
